Varujan Ughurlyan
and more

Varujan Ughurlyan was born on June 19, 1962, in Armenia, and relocated to the United States in 1990. He is a graduate of the Polytechnic Institute of the Republic of Armenia with a major in Computer Science and Electronic Engineering.
Born in a family of professional violinists and avid readers, he was exposed to the world of art, music, and literature at a very young age. With the help of his father, he learned to play the guitar early on in his life, and founded his first rock band in high school, writing his own music and lyrics. The passion for the creative arts eventually led Varujan into the world of literature and painting.

Tragically, Varujan passed away on March 13, 2007, at the age of 44, leaving behind a sizeable oeuvre comprising poetry, musical recordings, and paintings. Months before his death, he had published Lusni Hakarak Koghmu, a large-format book of his paintings and poetry. The English edition of the work, titled The Dark Side of the Moon and translated by Henrik Pipoyan from the Armenian, was printed in tandem. Varujan had also left two album-length recordings of original music ready for release.

Varujan….in his own words:

It is a miracle
When a light burns,
And a part of space
Separates,
Becoming
Wisdom,
While the darkness condenses,
Turns to memory,
Sinks into oblivious fog.
It is a miracle
When one burns his heart
And shares it
With the world.

Lord...Poet, take the pen and write.
Poet...You called me Poet, Lord.
Lord...And you always call me Lord,
but I am simply the Center and you are my Field.
You’d better just call me fellow Poet.
Poet...You called yourself Poet, Lord.
Lord...I honored myself with the title, and so became Poet.
Poet...Let us write, because Poets write.
Poet...And they dream at the same time as well.
Poet...Questions, questions, and ever more questions.
Poet...Questions and Poets are inseparable.
